Yinka Ogunbiyi, a Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard graduate, has developed HaloBraid, described as the world's first patent-pending braid-assist robot designed to reduce physical strain on hairstylists and improve efficiency in salons. The innovation has raised $7 million in seed funding led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with additional backing from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital. Over 7,000 salons have joined the waiting list to adopt the technology.
Ogunbiyi holds joint degrees in science and business administration from Harvard Engineering School and Harvard Business School. She previously worked on connected smart home appliances before developing HaloBraid. The idea emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic after Ogunbiyi spent four days installing her own protective knotless braids, prompting her to partner with co-founder David Afolabi to develop an automated solution. In a pitch delivered at the Harvard Innovation Challenge in 2025, Ogunbiyi explained that hair braiding—a process relied on by 20 million Americans every eight weeks—typically takes six hours, costs $200–$300, and causes long-term physical damage including arthritis to stylists despite remaining largely unchanged for 5,000 years.
HaloBraid is designed to assist rather than replace professional hairstylists. The stylist begins by parting the scalp, sectioning the hair, and creating an initial anchor knot manually. The machine then performs the repetitive braiding sequence at approximately five times standard speed before the stylist completes the hairstyle by finishing, trimming, and securing the ends. According to the company, the device uses machine learning to match professional-quality braiding and has completed thousands of braids over the past year. Industry data cited by the company indicates that nearly 95 percent of surveyed Black women reported they would opt for protective styling more frequently if salon visits were less exhausting and time-consuming.
The US Mission in Nigeria publicly commended the innovation on Friday, describing it as having global impact and highlighting its growing commercial interest. The funding is expected to support HaloBraid's market rollout. Ogunbiyi addressed concerns about cultural authenticity, noting that the technology only assists with repetitive movements that consume the most time and place the greatest strain on the body, leaving the craft and cultural aspects of braiding intact.
