FIFA Bans Qatar's Asim Madibo for 5 Matches After Dangerous Tackle Injures Canada's Ismail Koné

FIFA's disciplinary committee has imposed a five-match suspension on Qatar midfielder Asim Madibo following a dangerous tackle during the 2026 World Cup that resulted in a serious leg injury to Canada's Ismail Koné. The incident occurred in the second group stage match of the tournament on June 18, 2026, when Madibo was sent off for a reckless challenge in the 51st minute. Koné suffered fractures to his left tibia and fibula and was subsequently transported via stretcher to a hospital in Vancouver, where he underwent surgery. The injury ended his participation in the tournament.

FIFA's disciplinary body classified Madibo's challenge as "gross misconduct" and opted to impose the five-match ban—exceeding the standard minimum two-match suspension—reportedly due to the severity of the resulting injury. Madibo visited Koné in the hospital after the match, and Qatar's sports ministry also made official contact to express sympathy for the incident. The Qatar Football Association confirmed it would appeal the decision through FIFA's appeals committee.

The incident occurred during a group stage match won decisively by Canada 6-0 over Qatar. Qatar's coach López Enrique stated he did not wish to comment further on the matter. Following the suspension decision, Qatar faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final group stage match on June 24, 2026, but lost 3-1, resulting in their elimination from the tournament. Since Qatar was eliminated from group play, the suspension will carry over to their future official matches whenever they resume international competition.

Former international referee Cristina Ankel criticized FIFA's disciplinary decision, describing it as "unacceptable" in comments to CBS Sports. The decision remains subject to appeal through FIFA's appeals committee.
