France imposes curfews across multiple cities following violent weekend protests

French authorities have imposed curfews in Paris and several other cities following a violent weekend of protests that escalated from student-led demonstrations over education funding into widespread riots, vandalism, and looting. In Paris, curfews took effect Monday evening from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. in areas around Place de la République and Les Halles, according to French media reports. Multiple other French cities implemented similar measures: Lyon imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in central areas; northern cities including Lille, Wattignies, Douai, and Denain enforced curfews from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two days; and Nice announced a youth curfew from 9 p.m.

The unrest resulted in significant casualties and damage. According to France's Interior Ministry, 2,397 people were arrested during the weekend protests, with 997 police officers and gendarmes injured, seven seriously. At least two deaths were reported, and some individuals suffered severe injuries including loss of limbs. Approximately 550,000 people participated in protests across France on Saturday. Nearly 3,000 businesses were affected by looting and vandalism, with cars and motorcycles burned and storefronts damaged throughout affected areas.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the partial curfews at a Monday news conference, stating that tougher security measures would be rolled out alongside pledges of aid for affected businesses. President Emmanuel Macron said those responsible for property destruction would be held accountable. The initial protests began weeks earlier over education funding, but evolved into broader demonstrations reflecting concerns about cost-of-living pressures, economic conditions, and public services. French labor unions have called for additional strikes and protests scheduled for November 5. The unrest has also spread beyond France's borders, with violent incidents reported in Italy and protests occurring in Albania.
