Cooper Connolly continued his impressive international form with a blistering 47 off 27 balls, guiding Australia to a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first T20 international in Chittagong on Wednesday. The win gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, a welcome rebound after they lost the preceding ODI series 2-1.
Chasing 132 for victory, Australia stumbled early, losing Josh Inglis for five and captain Mitchell Marsh for 13 inside the first five overs. Connolly anchored the innings with a 40-run partnership with Tim David, who made 20, before falling just three runs short of his maiden T20I half-century while attempting a six. Matt Renshaw and debutant Nikhil Chaudhary both fell for 18, but debutants Joel Davies and Xavier Bartlett held their nerve to finish unbeaten on seven and four, securing the win with 10 balls to spare.
Earlier, Australia's spinners dominated as Bangladesh were bowled out for 131 after choosing to bat first. Adam Zampa claimed 3-18 to become the first Australian man to take 150 T20I wickets, while debutant Joel Davies returned 3-17. Together, Australia's spinners took nine wickets, the most by Australian spin bowlers in a T20I innings. Bangladesh's innings lost momentum after a strong powerplay that yielded 52 runs in six overs, with Mehidy Hasan top-scoring with an unbeaten 29.
Bangladesh pace bowling coach Talha Jubair acknowledged their failure to build on the strong start. “Our powerplay was excellent, we scored 52 in six overs, but from there we could not carry on,” he said. “We went too far for boundaries when we could have built a partnership.” Australian captain Mitchell Marsh praised Connolly's growth, saying, “(Connolly) has had a taste of international cricket over the past 12 months and he’s only going to continue to grow and get better the more comfortable he feels.”

Why This Matters
This result marks Australia's first win in the T20 format this series, reversing their ODI series loss and setting the tone for the remaining matches. For fans, the emergence of young talents like Connolly and Davies, along with Zampa's historic milestone, signals depth in Australia's bowling and batting lineups. This also highlights Bangladesh's vulnerability against quality spin bowling even on home pitches, which opposing teams can exploit.
