The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 10,060 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,887 deaths as of October 25, 2026, according to health authorities. The outbreak, declared in May 2026, has become the second-largest Ebola epidemic globally and the deadliest ever recorded in the DRC, with a case fatality rate of 48.6 percent.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, which differs from the more common Zaire strain in that it has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The virus has spread across eight of the DRC's 26 provinces, affecting 66 health zones. The eastern province of Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for over 70 percent of confirmed cases. Approximately 80 percent of newly identified cases are detected outside previously known contact networks, indicating significant gaps in disease surveillance and suggesting undetected transmission chains remain active.
The outbreak has spread beyond the DRC to five countries total. Uganda reported 20 cases before declaring its outbreak over in July 2026. Kenya confirmed nine cases linked to an imported patient who died on October 5, with 98 additional contacts under monitoring. Nigeria evacuated its first confirmed patient to Switzerland on October 26, though the country currently has no active cases within its borders; 52 contacts remain under observation. France reported one imported case. The World Health Organization warned that escalating insecurity, mass displacement, and restricted humanitarian access in conflict-affected eastern DRC are disrupting surveillance and response operations.
Response efforts face multiple obstacles. Approximately half of recorded deaths occurred among individuals who were never admitted to treatment centers, indicating low reporting of symptoms in many communities. Health workers have reported strikes over wage delays, inadequate transportation, and difficulty convincing families to surrender sick relatives for treatment or to permit safe burial practices. Only about 12 percent of confirmed cases have been identified among previously known contacts—far below the 95 percent threshold considered necessary for effective outbreak control, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaccination campaigns began in late August using the Ervebo vaccine, originally developed for the Zaire strain but showing promising results against Bundibugyo in animal studies. The World Health Organization announced on October 23 the launch of a new clinical trial in the DRC to evaluate multiple potential vaccines against the virus. By comparison, the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, the largest Ebola outbreak on record, resulted in over 28,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths; the current DRC outbreak has already recorded three times more cases and deaths in the same timeframe since declaration.
Why This Matters
The outbreak has established transmission chains across multiple African countries with confirmed cases in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and France. The Bundibugyo strain lacks approved vaccines or specific treatments, creating treatment gaps when approximately 50 percent of deaths occur outside medical facilities. Border crossings and ongoing conflict in the DRC have disrupted surveillance and vaccination reach; surveillance gaps mean 80 percent of new cases fall outside known contact networks, complicating containment. International health systems are now implementing isolation protocols and contact monitoring protocols affecting travel and healthcare resource allocation across at least five countries.
