U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 After Sudden Cardiac Event

Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican senator from South Carolina and key ally of former President Donald Trump, died on July 11 following a sudden health emergency. His office announced his death on July 12, stating he passed away after an unexpected illness. According to NBC reporting, emergency responders attended to a cardiac arrest incident at Graham's residence on Capitol Hill on the evening of his death.

Graham, 71, had just returned from Kyiv on July 10 after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He was scheduled to appear on an NBC television program the morning of July 12. His family requested privacy during the period of mourning.

A former critic of Trump during the 2016 presidential primary, Graham became one of Trump's closest political allies after Trump's first term began. Trump released a statement calling Graham "one of the greatest people" he had ever known and describing him as a hardworking American patriot. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster called him "an irreplaceable person" and a dedicated defender of the state and nation.

Graham represented South Carolina in the Senate since 2003, and previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives starting in 1994. He chaired the Senate Budget Committee and was known for hawkish positions on national security, particularly regarding Iran, Russia, and China. He was also a strong advocate for Israel and had visited Taiwan at least three times. In recent years, he emerged as one of the most vocal Republican supporters of Ukraine, leading bipartisan efforts to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog released statements honoring Graham as one of Israel's greatest friends. Netanyahu wrote that Graham understood the inseparability of Israeli and American security.

Iranian state media notably expressed satisfaction at his death, with broadcasters on Iran's Young Journalists Club television calling him a warmonger who had advocated for military action against Iran. Graham had publicly supported full cooperation with Israel to dismantle Iran's nuclear program and proposed military operations against Iranian targets.
