Vinícius Jr. sent off for hair-pull, Real Madrid beats Villarreal 1-0

Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 1-0 in La Liga's eighth round on Saturday, but the victory was overshadowed by Vinícius Júnior's dramatic red card expulsion. The Brazilian substitute was sent off in the 72nd minute for pulling the hair of defender Nathan Saliba during a counter-attack. The incident occurred immediately after what appeared to be a goal by Vinícius, which was disallowed following a VAR review that revealed the hair-pull at the start of the attacking play.

Vinícius had been benched by manager José Mourinho, with 19-year-old summer signing Yan Diomande starting on the left wing instead. Diomande opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with a low finish into the far corner, initially flagged offside before VAR overturned the decision. Real Madrid pressed for a second goal, and when Vinícius entered the pitch in the 52nd minute, he immediately made an impact. His apparent goal in the 72nd minute drew celebrations from teammates and Mourinho himself on the sideline—celebrations that were cut short by the VAR intervention.

Under the IFAB Laws of the Game (Law 12), pulling an opponent's hair constitutes violent conduct and results in a direct red card. The referee, after reviewing the pitchside monitor, ruled that Vinícius deliberately pulled Saliba's hair to create space during the counter-attack, justifying both the goal disallowance and the immediate dismissal. Vinícius protested vehemently before leaving the field.

Real Madrid managed to hold the 1-0 lead despite playing the final 18 minutes with ten players. The victory narrowed the gap to Barcelona, who lead La Liga with 21 points; Madrid now has 15 points after eight matches. However, Vinícius faces potential disciplinary sanctions from La Liga's disciplinary committee. If classified as violent conduct, a two-match suspension is likely, which would exclude him from the upcoming Clásico against Barcelona scheduled for 25 October. The final disciplinary decision remains pending.
