HTC, through its VIVE ORIGINALS division, has officially launched VPOP ASIA, a virtual idol audition program that combines virtual production technology with Chinese-language pop music and digital IP. The initiative represents a new content production model blending technology, entertainment, and music across multiple platforms.
The program features 15 virtual trainees reinterpreting 120 classic Chinese-language pop songs from the past 30 years. Production was led by VIVE ORIGINALS General Manager Liu Siming and took 18 months to develop. The format integrates advanced 3D virtual technology with live-action performance, using motion capture to render virtual character stage performances alongside real performers. Host Lulu (黃路梓茵), a Taiwanese television personality, makes her debut co-hosting a show with virtual idols, managing interactions through monitors while maintaining real-time reactions including conversation, high-fives, and hugs. Japanese VTuber Kson appears as a special guest, marking the program's cross-border virtual entertainment element.
The program features rotating panels of 29 music industry professionals from the Chinese-language music scene, who serve as judges evaluating virtual trainees across composition, vocal performance, stage presence, and market appeal. All on-screen roles—hosts, judges, band musicians, and the performers behind virtual characters—are played by real people.
Broadcast began July 18 on Taiwan's TVBS and CATCHPLAY+ platforms. Starting July 23, episodes air weekly on Thursday at 9 p.m. Japan Standard Time via VPOP ASIA's official YouTube and Twitch channels. Distribution also includes television, OTT services, YouTube, and Twitch across Asia. VIVE ORIGINALS frames the program as both a pilot for virtual idol content entering mainstream entertainment distribution and a reinterpretation of Chinese-language pop music through virtual characters and cross-platform delivery.
Why This Matters
HTC's VPOP ASIA represents a production model combining 3D virtual character rendering, motion capture, and traditional television/streaming distribution across Asia. The program measures market adoption of virtual talent in mainstream entertainment platforms (TVBS, CATCHPLAY+, YouTube, Twitch) and reinterprets a 30-year catalog of Chinese-language music through digital IP. Measurable outcomes include weekly viewership data, cross-border engagement metrics via YouTube and Twitch, and panel evaluation by 29 industry professionals, establishing a template for virtual idol content in regional broadcast and streaming ecosystems.
