A viral video showing an 18-year-old woman identified as Chisom with visible facial injuries has ignited widespread outrage on social media and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence in Nigeria. The video, which surfaced on Monday, depicted the woman with apparent injuries as a man identified as her husband exchanged words with neighbours who confronted him over the alleged assault. The suspect is now in police custody at Isheri Oshun Divisional Police Headquarters following intervention by the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu revealed troubling details about Chisom's background that have deepened concerns about her vulnerability. According to preliminary findings, Chisom was only 15 years old when her relationship with the suspect reportedly began. Gwamnishu disclosed that the young woman was taken away as a child at age seven following her mother's death, separated from her father and three siblings by members of her late mother's family. Her father was reportedly unaware of any marriage involving his daughter.
Initially, Chisom pleaded with activists not to pursue the suspect's arrest, prompting Gwamnishu to nearly abandon the case. However, he decided to involve his Lagos team from the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, which led to the suspect's apprehension and handover to police. Officers subsequently visited Chisom at a hospital where she was receiving treatment. Gwamnishu stated that her father had not seen his daughter until the viral video emerged online, and family members had been unaware of her circumstances for years.
The incident has sparked intense debate on social media platforms including X and Instagram, with Nigerians expressing concern about domestic violence, the challenges faced by women in abusive relationships, economic dependence, and the difficulties victims face in seeking to leave harmful situations. Activists and citizens have called for thorough investigation, stronger enforcement of existing laws, and comprehensive support for victims of domestic violence.
The Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation has committed to supporting Chisom throughout the investigation process, recognising her deep trauma and need for protection. Gwamnishu emphasised that despite everything she has endured, the young woman requires ongoing support, understanding, and safety measures. The Lagos State Director, Nta Amarachi Judith, is actively following up on the matter as police investigations continue.
Why This Matters
This case exposes critical gaps in child protection and domestic violence safeguarding in Nigeria. The victim's isolation from family at a vulnerable age, combined with an underage relationship and subsequent abuse, highlights how systemic failures leave young women exposed to exploitation and violence. The public outcry and intervention by civil society underscore the urgent need for stronger legal enforcement, better victim support systems, and community awareness to prevent similar cases and help survivors recover.
