Ed Sheeran addresses Macklemore removal, donates to Gaza relief
Ed Sheeran performed at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on September 20, opening the show with an emotional statement addressing the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore's removal from his tour after pro-Palestinian remarks. Macklemore pledged his $1 million tour salary to Palestinian relief organizations and challenged Robert Kraft to match it; Kraft responded by announcing Sheeran had requested he commit $2 million to humanitarian aid in the region. Ticket prices had dropped over 50% following the controversy and the withdrawal of all opening acts.
Quick Facts
- Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks at MetLife Stadium concerts on September 4-5
- Robert Kraft banned Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium
- Multiple stadium owners (including Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles) refused to host shows with Macklemore
- Tour promoter dropped Macklemore on September 14
- All opening acts withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore

Ed Sheeran performed his first show since the Macklemore controversy at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on September 20, opening with a lengthy statement acknowledging "mistakes" and expressing emotional engagement with the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The controversy began when rapper Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during Ed Sheeran's September 4-5 concerts at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, calling for "Free Palestine" and performing his protest song "Hind's Hall," which characterizes Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who also owns Gillette Stadium, subsequently banned Macklemore from performing at his venue, citing "hate speech" and "antisemitic rhetoric and imagery." Kraft stated that while he respected Palestinian suffering, Macklemore's selective presentation ignored Hamas's role and advanced divisiveness.
After Kraft and other stadium owners (including those of the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles) reportedly informed tour promoter Messina Touring Group that they would cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the bill, he was dropped from the tour on September 14. The Wall Street Journal reported that Kraft had allegedly been assured Macklemore would not repeat his Palestine comments, but the rapper continued his advocacy at the September 5 show. In response, all of Sheeran's opening acts—Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Beoga—withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore. Ticket prices subsequently dropped more than 50%, and the Philadelphia concert start time was moved from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
At the Philadelphia show, Sheeran stated he had never wanted to be "an activist musician" but acknowledged the conflict had forced him into a position of difficult decisions. He described the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks as "horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain" and called the situation in Gaza "catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate." He announced he was working to make contributions to help victims and expressed concern about venues pre-approving content or performers.
Macklemore pledged his entire $1 million salary from the tour to six organizations supporting Palestinians and challenged Kraft to match his donation. In response, Kraft announced Sheeran had asked him to commit $2 million to aid the region, though Kraft did not specify which organizations would receive funds or confirm whether additional donations beyond this commitment would follow. Kraft stated he had "dedicated much of my life to building bridges between all people" and noted his decades-long support for Palestinian entrepreneurship and opportunity-building, while also stating that advocacy for Palestinians and opposition to antisemitism "should not be mutually exclusive."
Macklemore has emphasized that his criticism targets Israeli government policies, not Jewish people, and stated in his own remarks: "Criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you." Pro-Palestinian groups held protests outside the Philadelphia venue with roughly 100 participants, while some fans reported difficulty obtaining refunds through secondary ticketing platforms.
Why This Matters
The removal of a touring musician over political statements has triggered cascading industry effects: all four remaining opening acts withdrew in solidarity; ticket prices fell over 50%; multiple NFL stadium owners enforced content-approval policies affecting future tour bookings. The incident exposes venue-level censorship practices and raises questions about artist booking conditions and secondary market impacts, affecting touring economics and live music accessibility.
