Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior agree contract extension until 2031

Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior have agreed to extend the Brazilian winger's contract until 2031, ending a stalemate that lasted almost a year. The improved offer, valued at approximately €22 million annually, represents a significant increase from previous proposals but remains below Vinicius Junior's reported demand of around €30 million per year. Talks between the player's representatives and Madrid officials, including general director Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat, took place in Madrid on Wednesday in what sources described as a positive atmosphere.

The 26-year-old's previous contract was set to expire in June 2027, entering its final year. Negotiations began in January 2025 but had stalled for extended periods before Madrid presented the improved terms following Vinicius Junior's return from the World Cup, where he scored four goals in five appearances for Brazil. The package includes a base salary, performance-related add-ons, and a renewal bonus—elements that had been key points of disagreement in earlier discussions.

Vinicius Junior has been with Real Madrid since 2018, making 375 appearances and scoring 128 goals with 100 assists across all competitions. He has won two Champions League titles and three La Liga championships with the club, and finished second in the 2024 Ballon d'Or rankings. His importance to the team was underscored by the fact that Madrid finished the 2025-26 season without a major trophy, coming second in La Liga eight points behind Barcelona, while Vinicius registered 22 goals across all competitions.

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, had previously indicated strong interest in signing Vinicius Junior should he not extend with Madrid, identifying him as their top target to strengthen their forward line. With the contract extension now agreed, this possibility has been substantially reduced. Madrid's retention of the Brazilian winger represents a significant development given the club's recent disappointing results and the financial implications of potentially losing a top-tier player to a direct European rival.
