Masahiro Ogawa, former president and vice-chair of Yasukawa Electric Industrial, died on October 2 from illness at a hospital in Kitakyushu, as announced by the company on October 5. Ogawa, 62, was a pivotal figure in the industrial robotics sector, contributing significantly to Yasukawa's rise as a global leader in the field. He joined the company in 1987 after graduating from Kyushu University's Faculty of Design and served for an extended period as head of the robotics business division, where he led market development in the United States.
Ogawa became president in March 2023 and prioritized "Physical AI," a strategic initiative combining artificial intelligence with robotic systems. He also served as chair of the Japan Robot Association. In May 2026, he stepped down from the presidency due to illness and transitioned to the role of vice-chair and executive officer.
A wake is scheduled for October 6 at 6 p.m., followed by a funeral service on October 7 at 10 a.m., both held at City Hall Yahata Central (Shityohoru Yahata Chuo) in Kitakyushu's Yahatahigashi ward. His wife, Kyoko, is his surviving spouse. Yasukawa Electric plans to hold a separate company-organized memorial gathering at a later date.
Why This Matters
Ogawa's death removes a prominent figure from Japan's industrial robotics sector at a time when Physical AI integration and automation are reshaping global manufacturing investment. Yasukawa Electric, a publicly listed robotics and automation major, will need to manage leadership continuity in its core robotics division and strategic AI initiatives. The loss affects ongoing market positioning in US and global markets where Ogawa had led expansion.
