Algeria Names 26-Player Squad for First World Cup Since 2014

Algeria has announced its 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation's return to the tournament for the first time since 2014. The team, known as Les Fennecs, is managed by Vladimir Petković, who favors a possession-based yet cautious tactical approach.

The squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent, with an average age of 26.5 years. Notable players include captain Riyad Mahrez, 35, who continues to showcase his skill for Al-Ahli, and 20-year-old forward Ibrahim Maza, described as a "pure trickster" by ESPN's Anirudh Menon. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of legendary French player Zinedine Zidane, also earns a spot after recently committing to Algeria.

Defensively, Algeria is anchored by Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund) and Rayan Aït-Nouri (Manchester City), while midfielders Houssem Aouar (Al-Ittihad) and Nabil Bentaleb (Lille) provide creativity and balance. The forward line includes Amine Gouiri (Olympique de Marseille) and Mohamed Amine Amoura (VfL Wolfsburg).

Algeria has been drawn into Group J for the tournament. They will open their campaign against defending champions Argentina on June 17 in Kansas City, Missouri. They then face debutants Jordan on June 22 in Santa Clara, California, and conclude group play against Austria on June 27, again in Kansas City. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage.

Algeria's best World Cup performance came in 2014, when they reached the Round of 16. Petković and his squad aim to build on that legacy and make a deep run in the 2026 edition.
