Man dies after entering tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

A man died on Saturday after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, England, and being attacked by the animal. South Yorkshire Police received reports at 13:35 BST of a man breaching the enclosure. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury. Despite efforts by emergency medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family was informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

The tiger remained uninjured and stayed within its enclosure following the incident, and police confirmed there was no wider risk to the public. The park was immediately evacuated, and all visitors were safely removed from the grounds. Yorkshire Ambulance Service deployed two land ambulances, an air ambulance, and a doctor to the scene. Witness Karmelle Pelham, 39, described hearing sounds resembling gunshots and seeing an air ambulance circling overhead, though she praised park staff for their calm and organized evacuation procedures.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park closed immediately following the incident and remained shut for the remainder of the weekend while authorities investigated the circumstances. The park said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by today's tragic incident. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the person who has lost their life." Emergency procedures were activated immediately, and the park stated it was "working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened."

Police urged members of the public not to share video footage of the incident circulating on social media, describing it as distressing. Local politicians, including Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband (MP for Doncaster North) and Lee Pitcher (MP for Doncaster East), expressed condolences to the family and thanked emergency services for their response.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, with its Land of the Tigers section opening in 2011. The purpose-built two-acre reserve is home to endangered Amur tigers, a subspecies with approximately 500 remaining in the wild. The enclosure features a raised 300-metre walkway allowing visitors to observe the tigers roaming through woodland and grassland or playing in a waterfall pool.
