Google has officially begun rolling out Android 17 to its Pixel phones, marking the latest major update to its mobile operating system. The release, which also includes a June Pixel Drop and a new version of Wear OS (based on Android 17) for Pixel Watches, introduces a suite of new features centered on multitasking, security, and user experience.
Among the most notable additions is the Bubbles multitasking system, which allows users to open any app as a floating “bubble” by long-pressing its icon. These bubbles can be minimized to stay on top of other apps, and on foldable devices, they dock into a “bubble bar” at the bottom of the screen for easy access. Google says the system is designed for quick multitasking or interacting with the Gemini AI assistant while viewing other content.
Android 17 also introduces Screen Reactions, enabling users to record their phone screen and capture themselves via the selfie camera simultaneously—a feature popularised on desktops for walkthroughs and tutorials. For devices with foldable screens, a new Foldable Gaming Mode transforms one half of the screen into a digital gamepad while the other half displays the game.
Security and parental control enhancements include improved location-sharing controls, Live Threat Detection, Advanced Protection improvements, and a “Mark as lost” feature in Find Hub. Parents can now set screen time limits and filter content without requiring a linked Google Account.
The accompanying June Pixel Drop adds several AI-driven features, including Gemini Omni, which lets users edit videos by conversing with the AI, and Lyria 3 for music generation. The speech-to-voice translation with AudioLM feature arrives on Pixel 10a devices, while Quick Share (compatible with iPhones via AirDrop) is now available on Pixel 9a and Pixel 8a.
Android 17 has been in testing since early 2026, and the final beta was released just weeks ago. The update will roll out to other Android devices from other manufacturers throughout the rest of the year. On the smartwatch side, Wear OS 7 brings Android Live Updates to the wrist, device control features, and enhanced emergency sharing on Pixel Watches.

Why This Matters
This update fundamentally changes how you multitask on your phone: the Bubbles system lets you float any app on screen while working in another, and Screen Reactions makes it easy to create walkthroughs with your face visible. For foldable users, the new gaming mode turns half the screen into a controller—no extra hardware needed. On security, the improved location controls and 'Mark as lost' feature give you more peace of mind if your device goes missing.
