Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British actor who became a global icon as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and later reprised the role in 'Star Trek: Picard,' died on October 28 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. According to his representative, Stewart died following "a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia," surrounded by his wife Sunny, family, and friends.
Stewart's path to sci-fi stardom was unlikely. In the late 1980s, he was an accomplished British stage veteran with decades of classical theater work but virtually unknown in America when Star Trek: The Next Generation producer Robert Justman discovered him performing Shakespeare at a UCLA lecture. Justman championed Stewart's casting against the objections of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, who doubted a bald British actor could lead the series. After a contentious audition process, Stewart won over Roddenberry and signed a six-year contract, skeptical the show would survive beyond its first season. The series debuted in September 1987 and, after initial struggles, became a landmark television production that ran for seven seasons and spawned four feature films.
Beyond Star Trek, Stewart's career spanned nearly six decades across stage, film, and television. He earned three Olivier Awards for his stage work, including recognition for roles in productions such as Peter Brook's 'Antony and Cleopatra' and appearances in over 60 Royal Shakespeare Company productions. He received multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations, and was a Tony Award nominee. His film and television work included roles as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise beginning in 2000, appearances in productions such as 'I, Claudius,' 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' 'Green Room,' and voice acting in animated series including 'Family Guy' and 'American Dad.' In 2023, he became a New York Times best-selling author with his memoir 'Making It So,' which chronicles his life from his childhood in Yorkshire, England, through his long career.
Stewart was recognized for his advocacy work beyond entertainment. In his memoir and public statements, including participation in the #NoBystanders campaign in 2014, he acknowledged bullying behavior from his childhood and expressed remorse for his actions. He also spoke publicly about witnessing domestic violence his mother experienced, and supported initiatives addressing violence against women and children. His public acknowledgment of past wrongdoing and commitment to anti-bullying efforts made him a meaningful figure in those conversations.
Lewy body dementia, the condition cited in Stewart's death alongside Alzheimer's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein protein clumps in brain cells. According to health authorities, symptoms include hallucinations, cognitive decline, confusion, and movement disorders. Currently, no cure or treatment exists to slow the disease's progression.
Topics
Why This Matters
Sir Patrick Stewart's death removes a foundational figure from popular science fiction and theatrical arts. The loss affects entertainment institutions: Star Trek franchises lose their most recognizable living link to the original series; stage and film communities lose a six-decade practitioner and mentor; viewers and fans lose access to his ongoing memoir projects and potential future appearances. His publicly documented advocacy on bullying and domestic violence awareness removes an established voice in those conversations.
