Harry Potter Fans Force Rerouting of £430M UK-Ireland Power Cable
Harry Potter fans successfully forced the rerouting of a £430 million UK-Ireland power cable project after learning it would pass through a memorial site to the fictional character Dobby at Freshwater West beach in Wales. The project manager received hundreds of calls from fans protesting the original route, leading Etchea Energy to work with planners to divert the cable to avoid the fan-created memorial.
Quick Facts
- Greenlink interconnector power cable rerouted
- BBC News interview aired showing original cable route
- Hundreds of fan calls received in protest
- Alternative route identified to avoid memorial site
- Cable project became operational in 2025

A £430 million power interconnector project linking the UK National Grid to Ireland was rerouted to avoid a site associated with the fictional death of house-elf Dobby from the Harry Potter films. The Greenlink interconnector, a 125-mile (200 km) undersea cable connecting County Wexford in Ireland to Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, was originally planned to pass through the location where Dobby's death scene was filmed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Project manager Simon Ludlam of Etchea Energy revealed in an interview with the Energy Revolution Podcast that the company received hundreds of calls from fans after a BBC News interview aired showing where the cable would go underground at Freshwater West. Ludlam initially expressed surprise at the objections, saying he was unfamiliar with the fictional character and questioned why a "fictitious character in a fictitious book" would require route changes. However, after learning the intensity and seriousness of fan concerns, the project team worked with planners to identify an alternative route that would avoid the memorial site.
Freshwater West has become a pilgrimage destination for Harry Potter fans, who leave colored stones and socks as tributes to Dobby at a makeshift grave made of pebbles with messages written on them. In 2022, the National Trust, which owns the beach, agreed to allow the memorial to remain following consultation but urged visitors to stop leaving souvenirs due to the site's ecological sensitivity. The rerouted cable now passes close to Bronze Age archaeological remains—including collared urns dating to circa 1700–1500 BC associated with human burial—that were documented in Pembrokeshire council planning documents.
Ludlam noted the project's successful completion, stating: "A lot of people were very happy about that, and the project is now going and Dobby's happy." The Greenlink interconnector became operational in 2025 and now supplies power to approximately 380,000 homes while preserving the fan-created memorial.
Why This Matters
The Greenlink Interconnector is a £430 million critical infrastructure project connecting Ireland's energy grid to the UK National Grid across 200 kilometers of undersea cable. The original route selection at Freshwater West triggered public objection that, while rooted in fictional cultural significance rather than technical or environmental grounds, prompted route redesign. The rerouting altered the project's engineering footprint and introduced proximity to documented Bronze Age archaeological remains (collared urns dated circa 1700–1500 BC). The project's 2025 operational status affects approximately 380,000 households' power supply and UK-Ireland energy interconnection capacity.
