SanDisk's 8TB PS5 SSD Costs Over $2,900, Topping Price of Multiple Consoles

SanDisk has launched its new line of officially licensed PlayStation 5 SSDs, the Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe, with prices that far exceed the cost of the consoles themselves. The 8TB variant is priced at $2,959.99 (down from a listed regular price of $3,699.99), making it more expensive than three PS5 Pro consoles combined. Smaller capacities are also steeply priced: the 4TB model costs $1,499.99, the 2TB version is $759.99, and the 1TB drive sells for $379.99.

The dramatic price increases are attributed to a global memory shortage driven by rising demand for AI-related components and broader tech industry supply constraints. According to price tracking data from PC Part Picker, a comparable Western Digital SSD with similar specifications sold for around $640 in 2025, meaning the new SanDisk 8TB drive represents a price increase of over 360% compared to last year's pricing.

The Optimus GX PRO 850P is designed specifically for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, featuring an optimized heatsink for the consoles' M.2 slot and PCIe 4.0 interface with read/write speeds of 7,300/6,300MB/s. SanDisk claims the 8TB model can store up to 200 PS5 games based on average installation sizes.

Industry analysts note that these price hikes are part of a broader trend across gaming hardware. Sony has raised prices on the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal in recent months, while Microsoft increased Xbox console prices twice in 2025. Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price by $50 in the U.S., and Valve's Steam Deck saw increases of up to $300 for the 1TB OLED model in May. The AI-driven component shortage continues to push costs upward for consumers across the gaming industry.
