Australian Woman Delivers Rare Naturally Conceived Identical Quadruplets

Jenitar Sau Na'amoana, 34, gave birth to four identical quadruplet daughters—Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa—via cesarean section on July 14 at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Queensland, Australia. The pregnancy resulted from a single fertilized egg splitting into four embryos, with all four babies sharing one placenta. Medical experts estimate such naturally conceived identical quadruplets sharing a single placenta occur in approximately one in 15 million pregnancies; the broader odds of naturally conceiving any quadruplets are one in 700,000. Dr. Alexa Bendall, the maternal fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician who cared for Na'amoana, stated the pregnancy may be the first of its kind in Australia and possibly only a handful of cases worldwide.

Na'amoana faced a high-risk pregnancy and was monitored by a large medical team from 10 weeks gestation. She was admitted to hospital at 25 weeks for continuous inpatient monitoring. The delivery occurred at 28 weeks and four days—a target milestone the medical team had aimed to reach. Bendall stated: "The fact that we've got four beautiful, healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible." Na'amoana experienced minimal blood loss during the cesarean delivery and is recovering well.

Neither Na'amoana nor her husband Jortham had used fertility treatments; the pregnancy was unplanned and surprised the couple, who already had four children aged between 1 and 10 years. The parents named one daughter Alexa after Dr. Bendall, which Bendall described as "a beautiful tribute." All four babies are thriving in the neonatal intensive care unit and are described as "currently doing extremely well." The family has launched an online fundraising campaign to purchase a vehicle with at least 10 seats to accommodate their expanded family; the campaign had received over A$37,000 (approximately US$25,000) in donations as of reporting.
