Bumrah Ruled Out of India's Sri Lanka Test Series with Knee Injury
Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India's Test series against Sri Lanka due to a left knee injury sustained in England, with the BCCI medical team advising complete rest to prevent further complications. Akif Nabi is among candidates being considered as a replacement for the two-match series beginning 15 August.
Quick Facts
- Bumrah ruled out of Sri Lanka Test series
- Injury sustained during fielding in England one-day series
- Medical testing at BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru
- Akif Nabi being considered as replacement
- India-A played two matches in Sri Lanka (Nabi took 6 wickets)

India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin on 15 August in Galle, following a left knee injury sustained during fielding in England's one-day series in July. The BCCI medical team advised Bumrah to rest and complete his recovery rather than risk further complications by returning prematurely. Bumrah underwent fitness testing at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru this week, where the medical team determined that early return to bowling could prolong his injury.
The injury stems from an earlier issue that emerged during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, for which Bumrah received injections as part of his long-term fitness management plan. Despite initial reports suggesting he might be fit for the Sri Lanka tour, the medical team opted for caution given the demanding schedule ahead, including the Asian Games, New Zealand tour, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
With Bumrah unavailable, India's fast bowling attack will rely on Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurrnoor Brar. Multiple sources indicate that Akif Nabi—a 29-year-old Jammu & Kashmir fast bowler—is being considered as a potential replacement, having recently impressed while playing for India-A in Sri Lanka, taking six wickets across two matches. Alternative candidates mentioned include Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for experience, or younger bowlers such as Mukesh Kumar and Anshul Kamboj.
India's squad for the series includes captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain K.L. Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Devdutt Padikkal, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Prasidh Krishna, Saransh Jain, and Gurrnoor Brar, among others. The first Test will be held from 15–19 August in Galle, followed by the second Test from 23–27 August in Colombo. The series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle.
Why This Matters
Bumrah's absence removes India's leading fast bowler from a Test series that counts toward the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle, requiring India to reshape its bowling attack with available pace options (Siraj, Krishna, Brar) or promote alternative candidates (Nabi, Shami, Kumar, or Kamboj). The decision reflects BCCI medical protocol to avoid reinjury given India's heavy international schedule through the New Zealand tour and Border-Gavaskar Trophy, affecting squad planning and match outcomes across August–September 2026.
