China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Attend BRICS Security Summit in India

India is hosting the BRICS summit in 2026 under the theme of "Building Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development." As part of this presidency, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on June 22-23 to attend the 16th meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and senior national security officials, an invitation extended by India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The high-level security dialogue brings together senior security officials from all BRICS member nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—to discuss pressing global and regional stability issues. The timing of the summit is significant, coinciding with recent developments in Iran-US negotiations, where President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed preliminary agreements to extend a ceasefire by 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and initiate talks on Iran's nuclear program.

This visit follows a BRICS foreign ministers' meeting held in New Delhi in May, where member states reviewed cooperation in political, economic, and cultural sectors while reiterating support for multilateralism and UN-centered governance reforms. Despite divisions among member nations over the Iran situation, a joint statement was issued after two days of discussions.

Wang Yi's visit is viewed in the context of gradually improving India-China relations. In recent years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have participated in multiple high-level meetings at multilateral forums, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin in 2025 and meetings in Kazan in 2024. Both nations have emphasized maintaining peace and stability in border regions and have stated that stable India-China relations are crucial not only for their respective development but also for regional and global stability.

Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu is also expected to attend the meeting. India's 2026 BRICS presidency priorities include innovation-driven development, sustainable development, digital connectivity, energy transition, and strengthening the capacities of developing nations.
