Xbox tests hourly cloud gaming charges for games you already own

The feature, available to Xbox Insiders in Brazil and globally, requires users to own compatible games and is set to expand in November 2026 as Game Pass subscription tiers introduce monthly cloud gaming hour limits.

Microsoft is testing a new pricing model for Xbox Cloud Gaming that allows users to purchase streaming hours without a Game Pass subscription. The feature, called Cloud Playtime, is currently available to Xbox Insiders and offers three introductory pricing tiers: 10 hours for $3.99 (~$0.40/hour), 25 hours for $7.99 (~$0.32/hour), and 50 hours for $11.99 (~$0.24/hour). In Brazil, these packages are priced at approximately R$6.90 to R$60. Purchased playtime does not expire and can be consumed across multiple sessions.
The service requires users to own a compatible game or select from available free-to-play titles—Cloud Playtime purchases provide streaming access only, not game ownership. The hourly charge applies exclusively to cloud streaming; local gameplay on Xbox consoles or PCs remains unaffected. Paid packages include ad-free streaming, shorter server queues, and high-quality video transmission, contrasting with a free, ad-supported tier also under testing.
This testing follows Microsoft's September announcement that Game Pass cloud gaming would be limited starting in November 2026: 5 hours monthly on Essential, 10 hours on Premium, and 15 hours on Ultimate. The company stated that approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers would be affected by these new caps, citing increased infrastructure costs as usage grows. However, some existing Brazilian subscribers received exceptions allowing them to retain unlimited streaming while maintaining active auto-renewal.
The Cloud Playtime model differs from Google's discontinued Stadia service, which offered unlimited streaming for purchased games but removed local download options. Microsoft plans to expand Cloud Playtime availability beyond Xbox Insiders in November 2026, though specific markets and official Brazilian pricing have not yet been announced. The initiative represents a shift toward metered cloud gaming costs distinct from game purchase and subscription fees.

Why This Matters
Microsoft is introducing metered cloud gaming charges for users with existing game libraries, shifting Xbox Cloud Gaming from unlimited Game Pass access to hourly purchase tiers. Starting November 2026, Game Pass subscribers (Essential, Premium, Ultimate) will face monthly hour caps (5, 10, 15 hours respectively), affecting approximately 4% of subscribers. This creates new revenue models and potential cost changes for users exceeding subscription limits, while establishing a pay-per-use alternative to full subscription or local play.
