Norris claims pole at Hungarian GP; Hamilton and Antonelli penalized
Lando Norris claimed pole position at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.012 seconds with upgraded McLaren machinery. Hamilton and championship leader Kimi Antonelli both received three-place grid penalties for qualifying infractions, significantly altering the top grid positions ahead of Sunday's race.
Quick Facts
- Norris secured pole position with 1:17.207
- Hamilton finished 0.012 seconds behind in qualifying
- Hamilton penalized three grid places for impeding Piastri
- Antonelli penalized three grid places for inadequate yellow flag response
- Grid reshuffled: Leclerc second, Piastri third, Verstappen fourth

Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on Saturday, clocking 1 minute 17.207 seconds to edge Lewis Hamilton by 0.012 seconds. The McLaren driver's first pole of the season came after the team introduced upgrades that Norris credited with boosting performance throughout the weekend. Norris said he felt confident in his ability to beat Hamilton's benchmark time before his final flying lap, describing the margin as "extremely close" qualifying.
Hamilton's second-place qualifying finish was overshadowed by a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during Q3. After taking evasive action when he spotted Hamilton's car moving slowly on the inside of turn one, Piastri gestured angrily at the Ferrari driver. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, the championship standings leader, also received a three-place grid penalty for failing to slow adequately under a yellow flag when Max Verstappen spun at the end of Q3. The stewards found that Antonelli's speed reduction lasted only briefly and his velocity through the incident location was faster than his previous best lap.
The penalties reshuffled the grid significantly. Charles Leclerc moved to second place, Oscar Piastri to third, and Max Verstappen to fourth. Hamilton dropped from second to fifth, with George Russell moving to sixth and Antonelli to seventh. Hamilton acknowledged after qualifying that Ferrari's early decision to run in the final phase limited his ability to capitalize on improving track conditions, saying "we just missed out on pole."
The Hungarian Grand Prix, known for its strategic complexity rather than pole position advantage—with no pole-to-flag winner since 2020 and only three in the past decade—will take place on Sunday and marks the final race before the mid-season break. Norris will seek to convert his pole into his first Grand Prix win since Brazil in November 2025, though he won a sprint race in Miami in May. The race will consist of 70 laps at the technical Budapest circuit.

Why This Matters
Pole position and grid penalties directly determine starting positions for Sunday's race at the Hungaroring, a circuit where pit strategy and overtaking difficulty historically limit pole-to-finish wins (none since 2020, only three in the past decade). Norris's 0.012-second margin over Hamilton was decisive; the three-place penalties to both Hamilton and championship leader Antonelli restructure competitive advantage in the top six, with Leclerc, Piastri, and Verstappen moving forward. Norris seeks his first Grand Prix victory since November 2025; race outcome depends on 70-lap performance before the mid-season break.
