Pankaj Kapur Reveals: 10-Year-Old Shah Rukh Khan Used to Supply Samosas at NSD

Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur has shared a fascinating anecdote from his days at the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, revealing that a young Shah Rukh Khan, then just 10 years old, used to supply samosas to actors during break times. Speaking on a podcast, Kapur recalled how he and his classmates would enjoy samosas and tea during intervals, supplied by none other than the future Bollywood superstar. Kapur, who is also the father of actor Shahid Kapoor, described how Shah Rukh's father or uncle managed the canteen at NSD, and the young boy would bring them snacks. "We would take everything backstage and enjoy samosas and tea together," Kapur said. "The person supplying us samosas was Shah Rukh Khan. He was just 10 years old then." This nostalgic revelation highlights the humble beginnings of one of India's biggest film stars. Shah Rukh's father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, ran a restaurant named 'Khatir' in the Safdarjung area and also managed the NSD mess. After school, Shah Rukh would regularly visit NSD to wait for his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan, spending his childhood among renowned theatre artists. In a 2014 interview, Shah Rukh Khan himself recalled this period, saying, "I was a very cute child and spent my entire childhood in the laps of India's finest actors, moving among them." He credited this environment for inspiring his acting career. The actors he grew up watching included Raghubir Yadav, Raj Babbar, Nadira Babbar, Naseeruddin Shah, Rohini Hattangadi, and Anupam Kher. Kapur later worked with Shah Rukh in the 1990s cult classic film 'Ram Jaane'. Shah Rukh Khan, known for blockbusters like 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan', is set to release his next film 'King', an action thriller, worldwide on December 24, 2026.
