Ilia Topuria Suffers Orbital Fractures in Title Loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250

Ilia Topuria faces an extended period on the sidelines after sustaining non-displaced fractures to both orbital bones in a brutal title defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday. The former two-division champion, who retired on his stool between the fourth and fifth rounds, was taken to hospital immediately after the bout and released on Monday.

According to Spanish media outlet Marca, the Georgian-Spanish fighter's right eye is more severely affected than his left, but he is expected to avoid surgery. Topuria's face was left heavily swollen with cuts that closed both eyes, and there is currently no timetable for his return to competition.

UFC CEO Dana White commented on Topuria's condition after the event, stating, "[Topuria is] busted up. I'm not a doctor, but his eye looked like he probably has a broken orbital." White added that his priority is for Topuria to rest and recover, emphasizing, "Tonight was a rough night for him — I just want to make sure he's healthy and good."

Despite dropping from No. 2 to No. 9 on the pound-for-pound rankings following his first professional loss, Topuria has accepted the defeat with grace. In his first post-fight message on Monday, he congratulated Gaethje and hinted at a future rematch, writing, "Justin, congratulations. You said you'd leave your mark on my face… and you did. … I'll heal. I'll rest. And I'll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous. And trust me… this story between us is far from over."

The event, held on the White House's South Lawn, marked a stunning upset as Gaethje dethroned the previously unbeaten champion. Topuria's camp, which he described as one of his best, did not prevent the damage that forced the corner stoppage. The lightweight division now awaits further clarity on Topuria's recovery timeline.
