Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced on Saturday that Egypt is prepared to take "all necessary measures" to defend Saudi Arabia's security and sovereignty, according to remarks made during a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy in the New Administrative Capital.
Sisi emphasized that any military assistance would be strictly defensive in nature and would not constitute offensive action against any party. He called on Egypt's parliament to convene an emergency session to authorize such measures should Saudi Arabia request them. "I am not speaking in order for us to fight anyone or attack anyone. I am speaking only for defence," he said. Parliament scheduled an emergency session for October 18 to consider the request.
The announcement follows escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including missile strikes on airports and critical infrastructure. Recent attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport earlier in October resulted in 14 deaths and over 300 wounded. Houthi strikes have also targeted airports in Dammam, Abha, Jazan, and Najran. Saudi Arabia, which is engaged in a military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, has been seeking regional support to counter these attacks.
Analysts note that Egypt has strategic interests in the region aligned with those of Saudi Arabia, particularly regarding maritime security in the Red Sea and protection of Suez Canal traffic. In a previous meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in September, el-Sisi had affirmed that "the security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states is an integral part of Egypt's national security." Saudi Arabia has already established a defence alliance with Pakistan and Turkey, known as the Mecca Alliance for Defence, signed in August and activated this month to deploy forces to the Gulf kingdom.
El-Sisi also confirmed during the ceremony that he would not seek to extend his presidency beyond 2030, stating the decision is "completely settled" with "no discussion" to follow.
Why This Matters
Egypt's pledge expands regional defense alignment in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, directly affecting maritime trade routes and airport operations serving multiple Gulf states. Measurable outcomes include: parliamentary authorization decision on October 18; potential deployment of Egyptian forces to Saudi territory; impact on regional supply chains and air traffic resumption timelines. Saudi Arabia has already activated the Mecca Alliance (Pakistan, Turkey) in October, creating overlapping defense commitments that may reshape force positioning and operational coordination across the Arabian Peninsula and Red Sea maritime zone.
