Janice Tjen faces Anhelina Kalinina in China Open 2026 first round

Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen will compete in the China Open 2026, a WTA 1000 tournament running from September 28 to October 11 at Beijing's National Tennis Center. In her first-round match on September 30, Tjen will face Ukrainian player Anhelina Kalinina. Tjen, currently ranked 42nd in the world, decided to skip the Asian Games 2026 to participate in the China Open, as both events were scheduled simultaneously. She prioritized maintaining WTA ranking points ahead of the Australian Open 2027.

This marks Tjen's return to competition after recovering from a right wrist injury that forced her withdrawal from the Singapore Open 2026. The 24-year-old had a difficult run in recent tournaments, exiting the Guadalajara Open in the round of 16 and losing in the first round of the US Open 2026 to Mirra Andreeva. Kalinina, ranked 50th globally, also lost in the first round of the US Open 2026, eliminated by Japan's Himeno Sakatsume in straight sets.

Despite holding a higher ranking, Tjen faces a competitive challenge against Kalinina, with the two players nearly equivalent in current ranking standings. The match is scheduled for 09:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) at the National Tennis Center in Beijing. The China Open 2026 features Elena Rybakina as the top seed, with other top players including Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva competing across the draw.
