Magnitude 4.7–4.8 earthquake strikes Kupang regency, East Nusa Tenggara

A shallow earthquake with magnitude between 4.7 and 4.8 struck Kupang Regency in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, at approximately 17:58–18:58 local time. The epicenter was located on land approximately 26 kilometers west of Kupang Regency at a depth of 9–10 kilometers, according to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The tremor was felt across Kupang Regency and Kupang City at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale IV, meaning the shaking was felt by many people indoors during daytime but caused no structural damage.

BMKG officials, including Kupang Geophysics Station Head Arief Tyastama, stated the earthquake was triggered by active fault activity. Preliminary modeling showed the earthquake posed no tsunami risk. As of the latest updates, no aftershocks had been recorded, though BMKG continued monitoring for seismic activity. Officials urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.

No damage to buildings was reported. BMKG noted that within the preceding week, Indonesia had experienced 14 significant seismic events of varying magnitudes and depths across multiple regions.
