Major League Baseball is making significant changes to its All-Star Home Run Derby, eliminating the clock format that has been a fixture of the competition. The changes coincide with a major shift in broadcasting, as Netflix takes over coverage of the event from ESPN, which has televised it since 1994.
The 2026 Home Run Derby will be held at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park on July 13. Under the new format, each hitter will receive 20 swings in the first round. If a player connects for a home run on their 20th swing, they will continue swinging until they fail to hit a long ball, replacing the traditional time-based constraints that previously governed the competition.
The advancement format remains competitive, with the top four hitters moving to the second round based on their performance, using the distance of their longest home run as a tiebreaker. Hitters will be seeded for the second round, with the top seed facing the fourth seed and the second seed facing the third seed.
In the second round, each player will take 15 swings, with the same rule applying: a batter who homers on their final swing continues swinging until they fail to connect. Ties in the second round will be broken by a best-of-three swingoff. The second-round format will also be used for the final round. MLB has indicated that no bonus rounds will be utilized under the new structure.
