SpaceX Building 8-Mile Pipeline to Supply Starship with Liquid Methane Fuel

SpaceX is constructing an 8.11-mile natural gas pipeline called Starpipe to supply its Starship rockets with liquid methane fuel, marking a significant expansion of the company's vertical integration strategy. The pipeline, operated by SpaceX affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development, will deliver natural gas directly to Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, where an on-site liquefaction plant will convert it into rocket fuel. This move eliminates the need for truck convoys of liquid methane, which would be impractical given that each Starship launch consumes roughly 1,000 tonnes of propellant.

The Starpipe project begins at an 83-acre tract at the Port of Brownsville that SpaceX is negotiating to lease for 50 years, crosses the Brownsville Ship Channel, and terminates at Starbase. The 16-inch-diameter pipeline is designed with sufficient capacity to support far more than the Federal Aviation Administration's current approval of 25 Starship launches per year. Construction is scheduled to begin on July 7, with an expected in-service date of January 26, 2027, according to filings with the Texas Railroad Commission and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell disclosed that the company plans to expand beyond operating the pipeline to actively exploring drilling its own natural gas and building additional pipelines. Since 2023, Lone Star Mineral Development has signed over 100 oil and gas leases with Texas landowners, signaling SpaceX's ambition to control the entire fuel supply chain from wellhead to launch pad. The pipeline could potentially connect to Enbridge's nearby Valley Crossing Pipeline expansion. Industry experts note that while the approach makes operational sense, extracting natural gas would represent a new challenge for a company without prior energy sector experience.

The pipeline's capacity exceeds current operational approvals, reflecting SpaceX's historical pattern of building infrastructure ahead of regulatory timelines. The FAA has approved up to 25 launches per year, increased from the previous limit of five. However, SpaceX has announced ambitions to launch hundreds of Starship missions annually as it pursues rapid reusability. The Starpipe project demonstrates the company's strategy of eliminating dependence on external suppliers and maintaining end-to-end control of its supply chain, a model the company has applied to engines, avionics, and satellites. If successful, the integrated fuel supply system could serve as a template for future SpaceX launch sites and provides on-Earth experience for eventual methane liquefaction on Mars.
