US and Iran intensify conflict with consecutive airstrikes as Strait of Hormuz tensions spike

The United States conducted its ninth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran early Monday, targeting military command centers, air defense systems, coastal surveillance sites, and drone launch facilities, according to US Central Command. The strikes followed the death of another American service member on Saturday during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq. This marks at least the third US death in recent days, with 17 US service members killed since the conflict began on February 28. President Donald Trump stated the strikes were conducted "in honor of" the fallen soldiers.

Iran retaliated by launching attacks on US-allied nations throughout the Middle East. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard attacked US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet, with sirens reported early Monday in Bahrain's capital, Manama. Iran also claimed to have launched a "surprise attack" on an enemy command center in Syria's Al-Tanf region. The Revolutionary Guard separately claimed two oil tankers "suffered accidents" after attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz through a southern route that the US military has encouraged ships to use. The Guard stated it would not allow "a drop of oil or gas" to pass through without permission, and claimed two additional vessels abandoned their transit attempts.

The escalation reflects the collapse of a 60-day interim deal agreed last month intended to permanently end the conflict and address Iran's nuclear program. Both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure, and the halfway point of the negotiation period has passed with little diplomatic progress. An undeclared ship fire broke out early Monday in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman's coastline, though its cause remained unclear. Iran's supreme leader warned of "unforgettable lessons" if US attacks continued, while Iranian authorities reported at least 50 people killed and 517 wounded from recent US strikes.

The conflict has triggered a global energy crisis. Brent crude oil climbed above $90 a barrel on Monday—the highest level since June—reflecting disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which previously carried one-fifth of globally traded oil supplies. Shipping traffic in the strait has largely stalled. The US last week reimposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports to halt crude oil shipments and had redirected six vessels while disabling one. President Trump has threatened to target Iran's power stations and bridges to force Tehran to loosen its control of the strait.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the administration remains open to negotiation "if it has to be real," but indicated the current Iranian leadership shows no willingness to engage productively. Israel warned of the danger of strikes spilling across its borders and threatened a full military response if Iran fires missiles at Israeli territory. The US is expected to send dozens of additional refueling planes to Israel as part of a regional force posture reinforcement, according to a US official.
