Two powerful earthquakes devastate Venezuela; death toll at least 32, international aid mobilizes
Two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.1 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on June 24, killing at least 32 people and injuring over 700, with the actual toll likely much higher due to communication problems in the hardest-hit coastal state of La Guaira. Venezuelan authorities declared a state of emergency and suspended schools and nonessential activities. Numerous countries, including Russia, the United States, Germany, India, and China, have offered humanitarian and rescue assistance.
Quick Facts
- Two consecutive earthquakes struck Venezuela
- Buildings collapsed in La Guaira and other areas
- State of emergency declared
- Schools suspended nationwide
- Caracas Metro and railway service suspended

Two consecutive earthquakes struck Venezuela on the evening of June 24, with magnitudes of 7.1 and 7.5, striking near the coastal town of Moron approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas. The shallow tremors, occurring just one minute apart at a depth of 10 kilometers, caused widespread destruction across the country. According to Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez, at least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured, though preliminary casualty figures did not account for the hardest-hit coastal state of La Guaira, which Rodriguez described as a "disaster zone" with dozens of buildings completely collapsed. Connectivity problems in the region suggest the actual toll may be significantly higher.
The Venezuelan government immediately declared a state of emergency and suspended all nonessential activities for the remainder of the week. Schools nationwide were closed and converted into collection and shelter centers. Public transportation services, including the Caracas Metro and the railway connecting Caracas to Miranda state, were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. Caracas airport was closed due to severe structural damage. The government activated its entire public and private health network to treat the injured, with particular focus on the most affected areas.
International assistance mobilized rapidly, with offers of humanitarian and rescue aid coming from numerous countries including the United States, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Portugal, India, and China. Qatar deployed rescue teams expected to arrive within 24 hours, while Mexico and El Salvador also sent rescue personnel. Germany indicated readiness to deploy up to six A400M military transport aircraft if requested. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese officials both pledged their countries' assistance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent condolences to Rodriguez, expressing Russia's solidarity and support for the Venezuelan people during this crisis. The Kremlin stated that Russia would promptly review any formal request for assistance from Venezuela. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that the actual number of victims would likely exceed initial reports and emphasized Russia's readiness to respond without delay should Venezuela request aid.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake sequence, with the first tremor reaching 7.1 magnitude followed immediately by the more powerful 7.5 magnitude quake. Both quakes struck near Moron in the earthquake-prone region. The shallow depth of the tremors intensified their destructive impact on buildings and infrastructure throughout northern Venezuela. A tsunami alert was also issued for parts of the Caribbean region.
Why This Matters
These earthquakes represent a major humanitarian crisis affecting a nation already facing severe economic and social challenges. The rapid international response reflects the scale of destruction and demonstrates how natural disasters can temporarily unite the global community around emergency relief efforts. The actual death toll and long-term recovery needs remain unclear due to communication blackouts in affected regions, potentially requiring sustained international support.
