The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which was administered to 186,291 candidates across Nigeria and five foreign countries. The examination, held from April 20 to April 30, 2026, covered 12 subjects and was conducted in all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and five foreign countries. Results were approved following the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO's headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on June 25, 2026.
The Award Committee, chaired by Dr. Folake Olatunji-David (Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education), approved resit examination dates of July 22 and 23, 2026, for Mathematics and English Studies. The resit examination is designed specifically for candidates with conditional deficiencies in one or both of these subjects. NECO explained that this opportunity allows affected candidates to remedy deficiencies and obtain the necessary certification for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School One (SSS1) without repeating a full academic year.
The Award Committee Meeting was attended by secondary school principals from across the country and NECO management representatives. Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, was represented at the meeting by Dr. Folake Olatunji-David. NECO's Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, confirmed the results release and reaffirmed the Council's commitment to maintaining credible assessment standards while ensuring eligible candidates can progress in their academic pursuits.
Why This Matters
The release of BECE results affects nearly 200,000 students across Nigeria and international centers, directly impacting their academic progression to Senior Secondary School. The scheduled resit exams provide crucial remediation opportunities for students with deficiencies, enabling them to advance without losing an academic year—a significant policy that balances assessment rigor with student welfare and educational equity.
