Anna Hazare to Discuss RTI Amendments with State Information Commissioner Ahead of Planned Hunger Strike

Senior social activist Anna Hazare has intensified his opposition to recent amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act in Maharashtra, warning of an indefinite hunger strike starting July 5 if the changes are not reversed. The amendments, introduced by the Fadnavis government on June 12, 2026, include higher fees for obtaining copies of information, mandatory identity proof for applicants, and a “one subject–one application” rule. Hazare argues that these provisions weaken transparency and make accessing government information more difficult and expensive for citizens.

Before taking the drastic step, Hazare is scheduled to hold a detailed meeting with Chief Information Commissioner Rahul Pandey at Ralegan Siddhi on Wednesday. Pandey had earlier contacted Hazare by phone on Monday, and the upcoming face-to-face discussion is expected to shape the course of the protest. Hazare has also written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, calling for the immediate withdrawal of the amendments, describing them as “anti-democratic” and detrimental to the RTI movement across the country.

In his letter to the Chief Minister, Hazare emphasized that the right to information is a constitutional right, not a favor granted by the government. He accused officials of behaving as “masters” instead of “servants” by hiding information. He also criticized the government for not conducting public consultations before introducing the amendments, stating that the process lacked the necessary transparency.

During a press conference, Hazare also expressed anger over recent political defections. He condemned the decision of six lawmakers from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction who joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, calling such party-hopping a betrayal of principles and ideals. He asserted that those who truly wish to serve society do not switch parties for personal gain.

Hazare’s prior hunger strikes have been instrumental in advancing the RTI movement in Maharashtra and at the national level. In 2003, he sat on an indefinite fast at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan; in 2004 at Ralegan Siddhi; and in 2006 at Alandi, demanding a central RTI law. The outcome of Wednesday’s talks with the Chief Information Commissioner will determine whether his latest pledge materializes.
