Musk Sues ZDF Over Belfast Riots Reporting; Broadcaster Removes Segment

Elon Musk has initiated legal action against German public broadcaster ZDF following a news report that claimed he incited anti-migrant violence in Belfast. The dispute centres on a segment aired on ZDFheute Live on June 12, 2026, in which the presenter stated that "a racist mob is hunting migrants" following a call from British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, which Musk had amplified to his 240 million followers on X. ZDF has since removed the introduction to the report after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Musk's German law firm, and the broadcaster conceded that its wording was "imprecise and therefore misleading."

The Belfast violence erupted following a stabbing incident in which a Sudanese man was arrested and charged with attempted murder. The victim sustained serious injuries, including the loss of his left eye. Hundreds of people rioted in Belfast's streets, chanting "Foreigners get out" and setting cars, homes, and businesses ablaze. Tommy Robinson had called for protests on X on June 9, describing the stabbing as "yet another invader attack," and Musk subsequently shared Robinson's post along with his own message: "Only by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change!!"

ZDF's statement acknowledged that presenter had intended to "succinctly summarize the complex situation" in introducing the 30-minute program but confirmed the wording used was problematic. The broadcaster stated: "Tommy Robinson called for protests after the knife attack in Belfast. The post was shared by Elon Musk." ZDF had also added a corrective transparency notice to the broadcast on Saturday before removing the introduction entirely.

Musk denounced the original report as "outrageous lies," asserting that he was being misrepresented. In response to accusations about social media inflaming tensions, Musk previously stated that it was "murderous migrants" rather than social media driving public anger. However, the Centre for Countering Digital Hate has alleged that Musk "amplified anti-migrant narratives" promoted by far-right figures and extended their reach to millions of users.

The incident reflects broader tensions surrounding migration in Germany and the wider European context. The Belfast violence attracted significant international attention, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer previously accusing Musk of attempting to "whip up division" over other incidents involving migrant-related violence. Musk's role in amplifying content on X continues to draw scrutiny from critics who claim he uses his platform's reach to inflame social divisions.
