The France vs. Iraq World Cup match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was suspended for more than two hours at halftime on Monday due to severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings, marking the first weather-related delay of the 2026 tournament. The match, which kicked off as scheduled at 5 p.m. ET, saw France take a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s 14th-minute goal. However, as the half ended, heavy rain and lightning prompted stadium officials to instruct fans to seek shelter and players to remain in the dressing rooms.

According to FIFA, the delay was triggered by lightning detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, activating US weather safety protocols. Under National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) guidelines, play cannot resume until 30 minutes have passed without a lightning strike in the area; each new strike resets the clock. The National Weather Service had issued flash flood and tornado warnings for the Philadelphia region, with storms capable of producing damaging winds and hail. Fans were evacuated from exposed seating areas, as much of the 69,000-capacity venue is uncovered.

French coach Didier Deschamps, speaking to broadcaster M6 during the delay, said it was pointless to keep updating players because weather conditions changed every 30 seconds. He warned that the key challenge would be getting the team mentally and physically ready again after a long pause. The match eventually resumed at 8 p.m. ET, without the planned mid-half hydration break. Both team staff expressed concern about the waterlogged pitch, but play was allowed to continue after conditions stabilized.

The disruption caused scheduling complications, as the simultaneously scheduled Norway-Senegal match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey also faced a travel advisory due to the same storm system. FIFA had previously stated that emergency protocols were coordinated with local authorities and host cities, but this was the first real test of those procedures in a match situation. No decision was taken to postpone the game entirely, though organizers acknowledged that a postponement would create significant logistical issues in a 48-team tournament where final group matches must kick off simultaneously.
