India's Gill hit on elbow in nets ahead of West Indies ODI opener

Gill required approximately 20 minutes of medical attention from team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain and experienced visible discomfort, though he returned to face throw-downs before the session ended. He did not resume full batting practice afterward.

The injury raised immediate concerns about Gill's availability for the opening ODI. If unavailable, Yashasvi Jaiswal would be the likely opening replacement, with vice-captain KL Rahul potentially leading in the first match. Gill had previously recovered from a similar fitness concern in Sri Lanka the previous month. During the same net session, veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both completed approximately 20-minute batting stints, facing a mix of squad bowlers and local net options. Bowling coach Morne Morkel noted the value of senior player mentorship, stating that experienced players help shape team dynamics through shared experience and guidance to younger squad members.

The ODI series marks a significant test for Gill's captaincy after India's recent series loss on tour in England. Since assuming ODI captaincy, Gill has averaged 67.11 across 11 innings with one century and five fifties. The series also serves as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa.

Separately, the West Indies Cricket Board announced a 25 percent reduction in player retainer fees as part of financial restructuring measures. International players will retain 12-month contracts, while domestic players will transition to seven-month retainer agreements. The CWI also suspended the men's Super50 tournament due to rising operational costs. CWI chief executive Chris Dehring stated the measures were "necessary steps towards financial stability." The West Indies Players' Association and players have cooperated with the changes, according to official statements. The West Indies squad, captained by Shai Hope, arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on September 23 but had not yet conducted a training session as of September 26.
