Arsenal have completed the signing of 16-year-old midfielder Axel Donczew from Cardiff City. The teenager has passed his medical and agreed terms with the Premier League club, with the transfer set to be formally ratified this week.
Donczew made history in October 2025 when he became Cardiff City's youngest-ever first-team player at 15 years and 234 days, appearing as a substitute in an EFL Trophy match against Newport County on October 25. He surpassed the previous record held by Aaron Ramsey, who made his Cardiff debut at 16 years and 123 days in 2007. Donczew made a second appearance for Cardiff in December, playing 23 minutes against AFC Wimbledon in a cup competition.
The midfielder, of Polish and Bulgarian descent, has represented Wales at youth level from under-15 through under-19, earning 11 caps and scoring two goals. He is also eligible to play for Poland at senior level and has been deployed in attacking midfield roles and wide positions.
Donczew's signing is part of Arsenal's broader summer recruitment strategy. The club also completed the permanent transfer of 18-year-old defender Elijah Upson from Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal's attempts to sign other teenage talent proved unsuccessful: winger Jeremy Monga, whom Leicester City valued at £10 million, joined Manchester City earlier in the summer despite Arsenal having an initial agreement in place. England youth international Mishel Nduka similarly left Arsenal to join Manchester City after declining a new contract offer.
Arsenal have also announced the €40 million signing of winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and continue to pursue other targets including Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes, for whom they have made an initial offer of £65 million.
Why This Matters
Arsenal's signing of Donczew represents youth recruitment activity in the Premier League's summer transfer window. The deal also reflects broader squad-building efforts by the club, which has simultaneously completed purchases of 18-year-old defender Elijah Upson from Tottenham and winger Christos Tzolis (€40 million from Club Brugge), while pursuing Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes for an initial £65 million offer. Donczew's arrival follows competitive youth talent acquisitions across English clubs, including Manchester City's signings of Jeremy Monga and Mishel Nduka from Leicester and Arsenal respectively.
