The San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2026 has awarded Double Gold Medals to a selection of affordable Scotch single malt whiskies, offering enthusiasts a chance to explore both familiar and lesser-known distilleries. The competition, which evaluates spirits from around the world, recognised these bottlings for their quality and value. All are fermented, distilled, aged and bottled in Scotland, made with 100% malted barley, distilled in copper pot stills, aged in oak for at least three years, and bottled at no lower than 40% ABV.
Among the highlighted winners is the Benriach 12 Year Old (46% ABV, £44/$59), a Speyside single malt matured separately in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-port casks before being married together. Under the guidance of master blender Rachel Barrie, it offers a well-rounded richness with notes of chocolate, orange, green apple and shortbread biscuits. Another Speyside entry, the Benromach 10 Year Old (43% ABV, £43/$57), uses first-fill ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks to showcase a soft, BBQ-like smokiness balanced by biscuit, honey, vanilla, coconut and pineapple notes.
From the Campbeltown region, the Glen Scotia 12 Year Old (46% ABV, £45/$60) is a 100% first-fill ex-bourbon cask matured single malt that delivers tropical fruits, soft salinity, and gentle hints of malted barley and barley cordials. It is praised for offering a taste of Campbeltown whisky at an accessible price point. Loch Lomond's Inchmoan 12 Year Old (46% ABV, £45/$60) is a peated single malt named after an island in Loch Lomond. It combines three different peated distillates produced using both classic swan neck and unique straight neck pot stills, resulting in a smoky but not overwhelming character.
Rounding out the selection is the Lochlea Our Barley (46% ABV, £47/$62), the flagship release from the Lowland distillery. Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and shaved, toasted and re-charred (STR) wine barriques, it offers a juicy and sweet profile. The full list of Double Gold Medal winners provides whisky lovers with a range of flavours and experiences, all at prices that do not break the bank.
Why This Matters
For whisky enthusiasts on a budget, this news provides a curated list of award-winning single malts that deliver exceptional quality without exceeding £47. It also highlights lesser-known distilleries worth exploring, offering a chance to discover new favorites from Speyside, Campbeltown, and the Lowlands, all validated by a prestigious competition.
