Singapore will open three new Mass Rapid Transit stations on December 26, completing major expansions of its eastern rail network. The stations—Bedok South on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), Xilin on the Downtown Line (DTL), and Sungei Bedok as an interchange connecting both lines—were announced by Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on November 4 at Singapore Urban Mobility Week.
Bedok South and Sungei Bedok stations complete Stage 5 of the Thomson-East Coast Line, extending it from Bayshore to Sungei Bedok and bringing the line to 29 operational stations spanning 42.8 kilometres. Xilin station is part of the Downtown Line 3 Extension. The opening will bring over 240,000 households within a 10-minute walk of a TEL station and 220,000 households within a 10-minute walk of a DTL station. Sungei Bedok will serve as the second interchange between the two lines, after Stevens station, strengthening the resilience of Singapore's rail network.
The new stations will provide residents in eastern Singapore with direct rail connections to the city centre and north to Woodlands, with projected journey time savings of 10 to 25 minutes on key routes. For example, travel from Havelock to Changi Business Park will be reduced from 70 minutes to approximately 45 minutes, eliminating the need for bus transfers. The stations will also improve access to employment hubs including Changi Business Park and Tampines Regional Centre.
Minister Siow noted that residents in the eastern region will eventually be able to use the Thomson-East Coast Line to travel directly across the Johor Strait into Malaysia once the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link is completed. When a future extension to Changi Terminal 5 is completed in the mid-2030s, the TEL is projected to serve approximately one million daily commuters. The Downtown Line will extend to over 44.6 kilometres and 37 operational stations with the addition of the new stations.

Why This Matters
The opening of three new MRT stations on December 26 extends Singapore's rapid transit coverage to 240,000+ households in the eastern region, reducing commute times by up to 25 minutes on key routes (e.g., Havelock to Changi Business Park cut from 70 to 45 minutes). The Sungei Bedok interchange strengthens network resilience as a second connection between the Thomson-East Coast and Downtown lines. Future extensions (Malaysia link pending Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit completion; Changi Terminal 5 extension in mid-2030s) will expand the network's reach and capacity.
