Wildfire evacuates 200+ people at Lake Garda amid heat wave
A major wildfire at Lake Garda's western shore in Italy on Friday evening forced the evacuation of over 200 people, mostly tourists. Fire services used aircraft and helicopters to fight the blaze while winds up to 40 km/h complicated containment efforts, and the fire remains linked to Italy's severe ongoing heat wave.
Quick Facts
- Wildfire broke out in forest and scrubland

A large wildfire broke out on Friday evening in Olzano, a district of Tignale on the western shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy, forcing the evacuation of more than 200 people. The fire spread through forest and scrubland above the shoreline, with flames reaching toward the Madonna di Castello pilgrimage church. Rescue teams conducted house-to-house searches in the affected area because many buildings were holiday rentals and it was unclear whether occupants were present. At least five vacation homes and the Residence Panorama La Forca hotel were evacuated.
Firefighting efforts included two water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, with ground teams from the fire service, forestry police, and civil protection operating continuously from 9:45 p.m. on Friday through at least Saturday morning. Wind gusts of up to 40 km/h significantly hampered the containment effort, repeatedly fanning the flames and pushing the fire toward populated areas. Mayor Daniele Bonassi described scenes around the pilgrimage church as "frightening" and "appalling," with trees and undergrowth being consumed by flames.
Among the evacuees were many foreign tourists who cut short their holidays. One German family staying at the hotel managed to depart safely after hastily packing their car, with all hotel guests successfully reaching safety. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The wildfire occurred during an extended heat wave affecting Italy, with extreme temperatures forecast to continue through mid-August. The prolonged drought has left landscapes parched, rivers and lakes running unusually low, and northern Adriatic waters reaching temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.
Why This Matters
Over 200 evacuees—mostly international tourists—were displaced from holiday accommodations around Lake Garda; multiple vacation homes and a hotel were emptied. Fire containment was slowed by wind gusts and prolonged drought tied to an ongoing Italian heat wave forecast through mid-August. Emergency services deployed aircraft and ground teams continuously; infrastructure risk (pilgrimage church, residential buildings) and potential for rapid spread remain under monitoring as high temperatures persist across northern Italy and local water levels remain abnormally low.
