China's J-20 Stealth Fighter Production Reaches 500 Units
China's J-20 stealth fighter has reached an estimated 500 units produced, with approximately 300 in operational service across PLAAF regiments. Annual production is estimated at 100–120 aircraft, with projections suggesting the fleet could exceed 1,000 by 2030, making it the most-produced fifth-generation fighter outside the United States.
Quick Facts
- First flight of J-20 prototype
- Public debut at Zhuhai airshow
- Entry into operational service
- Production milestone of approximately 500 units
- Deployment across PLAAF regiments and brigades

China's Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter has reached an estimated production milestone of approximately 500 units, according to open-source analyses by defense researchers including Andreas Rupprecht. The aircraft, which first flew on 11 January 2011 and entered operational service around 2017, has become the most-produced fifth-generation fighter outside the United States. Production rates have accelerated significantly, with recent estimates placing annual output at around 100–120 aircraft by late 2025.
The J-20, developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation's 611 Institute under chief designer Yang Wei, features a distinctive canard-delta configuration with diverterless supersonic inlets, internal weapon bays, and an advanced sensor suite including an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. Early variants relied on Russian AL-31 derivative engines, but modern production aircraft increasingly use Chinese-made WS-10C engines, with newer variants testing the WS-15 powerplant to enable supercruise capability. China has released no official radar cross-section data, leaving precise stealth performance unverified in open sources.
According to multiple defense analysts, approximately 300 J-20s are currently in operational service across at least 13–14 People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) regiments and brigades, with additional aircraft in test and training units. Satellite imagery and serial number analysis indicate the aircraft has been deployed across all five major territorial commands of the PLA. The production expansion demonstrates China's ability to sustain high-rate manufacturing of complex military aircraft while simultaneously developing other fighters, including the carrier-capable J-35, the J-16 multirole fighter, and sixth-generation combat prototypes.
Projections by the UK-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) suggest the J-20 fleet could reach approximately 1,000 aircraft by 2030 if current production rates persist. For comparison, the U.S. Air Force operates 185 F-22 Raptors, with 143 in combat-ready squadrons; F-22 production ended in 2011 after 195 aircraft were built. The sustained production of the J-20 reflects China's expanded aerospace manufacturing base, incorporating indigenous engines, avionics, composite materials, and increasingly efficient assembly lines. Beijing has not officially disclosed J-20 fleet size or production figures.
Why This Matters
China's sustained production of approximately 500 J-20 aircraft—with about 300 operationally deployed across PLAAF regiments and annual output of 100–120 units—represents a measured expansion of its fifth-generation combat aircraft inventory. At current rates, fleet size could reach 1,000 by 2030, affecting regional air-power balances and demonstrating China's independent capacity in aerospace manufacturing, including engines, avionics, and composite materials. Comparatively, the U.S. Air Force operates 185 F-22 Raptors (production ended 2011); sustained Chinese production reflects different procurement strategies and industrial investment patterns, with implications for force structure, procurement timelines, and technological development trajectories in the Asia-Pacific region.
