The PGA Tour announced Wednesday that Trey Mullinax has received a six-month suspension for violating the Tour's anti-doping policy after testing positive for a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Mullinax admitted to using medication to treat a condition he was originally diagnosed with in college without seeking approval under the policy. In a statement, the 34-year-old golfer said: "My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication and I failed to do so."
Mullinax emphasized that he never intended to gain competitive advantage, stating: "I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents." He accepted the consequences and indicated he looks forward to competing again in 2027. Mullinax is eligible to return to competition on January 16, 2027, one week before the 2027 PGA Tour season begins.
Mullinax is believed to be the ninth player suspended under the PGA Tour's drug testing program since it began in 2008, and the first since Byeong Hun An in October 2023. An had tested positive for a cough syrup sold over the counter in South Korea that contained a banned substance. Mullinax, who won the 2022 Barbasol Championship for his sole PGA Tour victory, had conditional status for 2026 and finished 150th in the FedEx Cup the previous year. He made only three starts between the PGA and Korn Ferry tours in 2026, with his last appearance on April 27 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. His limited schedule followed a 2024 hip surgery that led to a medical extension.

Why This Matters
Mullinax becomes the ninth player suspended under the PGA Tour's drug testing program since 2008, establishing documented enforcement of anti-doping compliance across professional golf. His six-month ban removes him from competition through January 2027, affecting tournament rosters and his earning eligibility during that period. The suspension reinforces that PGA Tour players must obtain advance medical exemptions for any medication, regardless of therapeutic intent; failure to do so carries measurable competitive consequences independent of performance-enhancing intent.
