Georgia Hunter Bell claimed the women's 800m gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on 31 July, finishing in 1:59.51. The 32-year-old English runner led from the start, controlling the pace through a slow first lap of 60.32 seconds before accelerating with 200 metres remaining to secure victory by more than one second. Kenya's world champion Lilian Odira took silver in 2:00.58, with Australia's Sarah Billings earning bronze in 2:00.61.
Hunter Bell's triumph marks her first Commonwealth Games medal and her first outdoor gold title in the 800m. The victory adds to her earlier 1500m world indoor championship win earlier in 2026, and follows her Olympic bronze medal at 1500m in Paris and her 2025 World Championships silver at 800m. She is a training partner of Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson, who did not compete at these Games.
Describing her approach, Hunter Bell said she felt "really calm" and "composed" despite the race not following her original plan. She had intended to make her move with 200 metres to go but found herself at the front early. "I thought I'll just control it, keep it relaxed, not too fast, and then when I feel that pressure on me with the move being made, I'll be ready to go," she explained. She credited the Glasgow crowd with supporting her through the final stretch, noting she was surprised by the reception given to an English competitor.
Hunter Bell's comeback story defines her career. After retiring in her mid-20s following injuries and setbacks, she returned to running during the Covid-19 pandemic through parkruns and cycling. She reconnected with coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows in late 2022 and made her international comeback at the 2024 world indoor championships in Glasgow. Now a full-time athlete after leaving her tech job, she is targeting further gold medals at the European Championships in Birmingham (beginning 10 August) and the inaugural Ultimate Championships in September, aiming for what she described as "four opportunities to win gold this year."
Her Commonwealth victory underscored her emergence as one of Britain's leading middle-distance runners, achieving six global podium finishes in less than two years since her return to competition.

Why This Matters
Hunter Bell's victory demonstrates a significant shift in the competitive landscape of British middle-distance running. At age 32, after retiring in her mid-20s due to injuries and making a comeback during the Covid-19 pandemic, she has achieved six global podium finishes in less than two years. Her performance places her among active contenders for medals at the 2026 European Championships (Birmingham, beginning 10 August) and the inaugural Ultimate Championships in September, affecting medal predictions and athlete rankings in the 800m and 1500m events.
