The Nigerian Army has announced a major strategic reshuffle of 19 senior officers, including theatre commanders and General Officers Commanding (GOCs), approved by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. The reorganization, announced on Saturday by Acting Director of Army Public Relations Colonel Appolonia Anele, affects field commanders, military school commandants, and principal staff officers at Army Headquarters. The move is aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness, strengthening national security, and consolidating the Army's capacity to address emerging security challenges including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country.
Key operational appointments include Major General WM Dangana as GOC of 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, replacing Major General EF Oyinlola, and Major General EI Okoro as GOC of 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander of Joint Task Force South-South Operation Delta Safe, replacing Major General EE Emeka. Major General JR Lar has been appointed Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, while Brigadier General OM Oyekola assumes the role of Acting Military Secretary (Army). Brigadier General I Waziri retains his position as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff.
Additional appointments reflect the Army's modernization priorities. Major General SA Emmanuel was appointed Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, reinforcing the military's focus on emerging domains of warfare and technology-driven security operations. Major General O Adegbe was appointed Director of Intelligence and Security at Defence Headquarters. Brigadier General IB Buhari and Brigadier General K Rabiu were appointed Commanders of Headquarters 63 Brigade and Headquarters 31 Artillery Brigade respectively.
The reshuffle also includes appointments to military education and institutional development roles. Major General KE Chigbu was appointed Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College, while Major General SD Makolo became Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armour School. Major General SO Adejimi was named Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport, and Major General FS Etim assumed the position of Chief of Training at Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command Nigerian Army (TRADOC). Brigadier General U Ahmad was appointed Commandant of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria.
Management appointments include Major General KO Ukandu as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Post Housing Development Limited, and Major General AI Allison as Managing Director of Defence Properties Limited. The Chief of Army Staff emphasized that the newly appointed senior officers must demonstrate exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Army's constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria's sovereignty, protecting territorial integrity, and supporting civil authority in maintaining peace and security across the nation.
Why This Matters
This reshuffle signals Nigeria's strategic recalibration of military command in response to persistent security threats. The appointments to operational theatres—particularly Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace and Operation Delta Safe—directly impact counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts across multiple regions. For investors and stakeholders, this reorganization demonstrates institutional continuity and renewed commitment to stabilizing conflict-affected areas, which affects business operations, supply chains, and regional development initiatives. The emphasis on space command and emerging domains of warfare indicates modernization efforts that influence Nigeria's broader security doctrine and technological positioning.
