Pilot Dies as Light Aircraft Crashes into Beijing's CITIC Tower, 13 Injured

A two-seat light sport aircraft collided with the CITIC Tower, China's tallest skyscraper, in Beijing's Chaoyang district on Friday, June 26, at approximately 5:55 p.m. local time. The Sunward SA 60L Aurora, a domestically manufactured aircraft owned by a local general aviation business, struck the 528-meter (1,732-foot), 108-story building located in the central business district near the East Third Ring Road. The impact caused visible structural damage, with photographs showing two smashed windows and debris scattered across the area, including sections of the aircraft fuselage visible on the ground and streets below.

Chinese authorities confirmed the pilot's death and injuries to 13 people in the vicinity of the building on Saturday, more than 24 hours after the incident occurred. The pilot was reportedly alone aboard the two-seater aircraft at the time of the crash. The authorities have not disclosed the pilot's identity, though flight data and surveillance footage circulated on social media before being removed by Chinese authorities. According to reports, a man named Liu Junhua was associated with a vehicle searched by plainclothes officials at Shifousi Airport in Pinggu district, though a company official later appeared to deny any connection to the incident.

The crash is highly unusual given Beijing's exceptionally strict airspace controls, which restrict private light aircraft and drones from flying without special authorization. The CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, serves as the headquarters of CITIC Group, one of China's largest state-owned financial conglomerates, and stands as one of the world's top ten tallest buildings. The incident prompted immediate emergency evacuations, with fire engines, dozens of police cars, and ambulances responding to the scene. Authorities cordoned off the area and restricted media access, preventing photographs and asking witnesses to delete footage they had captured.

An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, with authorities providing limited information about the circumstances. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the aircraft had deviated severely from its normal flight path before impact. The aircraft was confirmed to be operated by Dongfang Xianfeng Company, based at Shifousi Airport. Structural damage to the building appeared limited to the exterior façade, with temporary barriers placed over the damaged windows by Saturday. The proximity of the crash site to Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of China's Communist Party leadership approximately 6 kilometers away, added to the sensitivity surrounding the incident.
