JAKARTA — The National Awakening Party (PKB) has urged the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) to clarify its political position toward President Prabowo Subianto's administration, warning that an ambiguous stance could disrupt the government's strategic programs.
Jazilul Fawaid, the head of the PKB faction in the People's Representative Council (DPR), said on Thursday that PDIP should be firm and transparent — either fully embrace the opposition role or join the ruling coalition. "I hope they take a clear stance. If they want to be in opposition, be in opposition. Don't be grey," he stated at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta.
His remarks came in response to reports that Andi Widjajanto, a PDIP politician, was allegedly present at a student protest at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle on June 12, 2026. Jazilul stressed that the government — backed by a broad coalition of parties — is working hard to deliver on President Prabowo's campaign promises, and that unity among all political forces is essential.
While PDIP has repeatedly described itself as a "balancing" force in the political landscape, Jazilul argued that this position remains unclear. "What kind of balancing? We don't understand," he said, adding that a vague stance could be seen as disruptive. He called on PDIP to be "gentle" and state its position unambiguously, while emphasizing that PKB respects different political views.
Separately, PDIP's party leadership has denied any involvement in the recent student demonstrations. Said Abdullah, chairman of PDIP's central executive board, asserted that the party had no role in mobilizing protesters and that the alleged participation of Andi Widjajanto should not be interpreted as an official PDIP action. "It is not PDIP's method," Said said on Wednesday at the parliament complex.
Why This Matters
This development signals growing political pressure on PDIP, Indonesia's largest opposition party, to pick a side in President Prabowo's government. For businesses and investors, clarity in political alignment reduces policy uncertainty and potential disruption to government programs. A clear stance could either strengthen coalition stability or intensify political rivalry, affecting regulatory and legislative outcomes.
