U.S. completes eighth night of Iran strikes after two soldiers killed in Jordan
The U.S. military completed its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran on July 18, targeting IRGC military facilities in response to an Iranian attack in Jordan that killed two American service members. Iran retaliated with drone strikes on U.S. bases in Kuwait and missile attacks toward Jordan, while the interim U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement collapsed as Tehran suspended its commitments.
Quick Facts
- U.S. launched eighth consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran
- U.S. airstrikes targeted coastal surveillance systems, air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile/drone storage sites
- Iranian attack on U.S. base in Jordan killed two American service members
- One U.S. service member reported missing in action
- Iran suspended commitments to ceasefire agreement with U.S.

The U.S. military concluded its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran on July 18, targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities, coastal surveillance systems, air defense installations, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. The strikes were launched in response to an Iranian attack on a U.S. base in Jordan on July 17 that killed two American service members and left one missing in action. U.S. Central Command stated the strikes were designed to "swiftly punish" IRGC forces and further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran retaliated on Sunday with drone strikes targeting U.S. bases in Kuwait, including the Al-Adiri Camp and Ali Al Salem Air Base, and launched missiles toward Jordan. Jordan's armed forces reported intercepting three Iranian missiles with no reported casualties or material damage, though one missile fell inside Jordanian territory. The Israeli military detected missiles from Iran targeting the southern Jordanian city of Aqaba and reported intercepting fragments near Eilat with no damage or injuries.
The escalation marks the collapse of a ceasefire agreement reached between the U.S. and Iran last month. Iran's Supreme Leader announced on Saturday that Tehran was suspending its commitments to the accord, characterizing the U.S. agreement as "worthless." The interim deal had aimed to pause fighting while both sides worked toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately one-fifth of the world's traded oil in peacetime.
These deaths bring the total number of U.S. military personnel killed since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28 to 16. They mark the first American military fatalities caused by Iranian fire since March. U.S. Central Command confirmed that more than 50,000 U.S. troops remain positioned across the Middle East and are "highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready." President Trump dismissed Iran's suspension of the memorandum of understanding, stating he "couldn't care less."
Regional tensions remain elevated with no immediate signs of de-escalation. The Trump administration has offered limited clarity on the duration or scope of its renewed military campaign.
Why This Matters
U.S.-Iran military escalation has resumed following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement and an Iranian attack that killed two American service members in Jordan. The U.S. has maintained over 50,000 troops in the Middle East and resumed sustained airstrikes; Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes on U.S. and allied positions. Measured stakes: The Strait of Hormuz—carrying approximately one-fifth of global seaborne oil trade—remains threatened by military operations; regional supply chain and energy market volatility are likely to intensify if escalation continues without de-escalation signals.
