Google has released Wear OS 7, beginning its rollout to Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4 devices. The update introduces Live Updates, a feature that synchronizes real-time information across Android phones and Wear OS smartwatches, allowing users to track sports scores, meal deliveries, and other live events on both devices simultaneously. The company reports that Wear OS 7 delivers up to 10 percent improved battery life compared to Wear OS 6.
The update also lays groundwork for Android XR smart glasses, which Google plans to release later this year. Notably, Xreal's Aura XR glasses, developed in collaboration with Google, began accepting preorders at $99, with full availability expected this fall. The glasses will integrate with Wear OS 7, allowing users to preview photos taken with the glasses on their smartwatch.
Gemini Intelligence features are coming to Wear OS 7 later this year, including Create My Widget, which generates custom widgets using natural language prompts, and enhanced multi-step app automation for tasks like making restaurant reservations or placing orders. The update also introduces an output switcher for easier media control across connected devices and includes enhanced emergency features, enabling Pixel Watch to automatically contact selected emergency contacts in addition to emergency services when detecting falls, loss of pulse, or car crashes. Third-party developers now have access to improved Wear OS Widgets, which are more dynamic than previous Tiles, though legacy Tiles support continues for older devices.
Why This Matters
Wear OS 7 represents a significant step forward in wearable intelligence and cross-device integration. The Live Updates feature directly improves daily utility by keeping critical information synchronized across phones and watches—essential for users who rely on real-time notifications. Battery improvements extend device usage, addressing a persistent pain point for smartwatch users. Most importantly, the integration with Android XR smart glasses and Gemini AI signals Google's strategic push into ambient computing and AI-driven productivity, positioning Wear OS as a central hub in an expanding ecosystem of connected devices. For developers and enterprises, the enhanced automation capabilities open new opportunities for task optimization and emergency response systems.
