A CH-47 Chinook helicopter operated by the Italian military as part of the EU's Operation Althea crashed near Brčko in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday afternoon. Four personnel died—three at the scene and one in hospital—while 11 others were injured. No civilians were harmed, and no civilian infrastructure was damaged, according to EUFOR confirmation.
The four deceased have been identified by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto as two soldiers, Sergeant Simone Ruggia and Sergeant Claudio Marchesi, and two members of the Red Cross Volunteer Military Corps, Lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo and Sergeant Laura Procacci. The 11 injured are not reported to be in life-threatening condition. The helicopter had departed from Viterbo on Thursday, stopping at Pratica di Mare military airport near Rome before reaching Bosnia.
Brčko district mayor Siniša Milić declared Friday a day of mourning and described the crash as one of the most tragic events involving international military forces in Bosnia since 1997. He expressed gratitude to the helicopter pilot for avoiding densely populated areas, which prevented civilian casualties. Defence Minister Crosetto visited injured personnel in hospitals in Brčko and Tuzla on Friday, accompanied by Bosnia's Defence Minister Zukan Helez.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Premier Giorgia Meloni released condolence messages. Meloni visited Rome's Defence Village at Circus Maximus to pay tribute and called for public reflection on the losses ahead of National United and Armed Forces Day on November 4. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Italian Ministry of Defence and EUFOR.
EUFOR's Operation Althea, which has operated in Bosnia since 2004, comprises approximately 1,200 personnel working under a UN Security Council mandate to maintain security and oversee military provisions of the peace agreement that ended the 1992–95 war.
Why This Matters
Four international peacekeeping personnel died in a military aviation incident within an active UN-mandated EU peacekeeping operation in Bosnia (Operation Althea, ~1,200 personnel since 2004). No civilian casualties were recorded. The crash triggers formal investigations by Italian Defence Ministry and EUFOR, affecting operations tempo and personnel safety protocols for the mission responsible for post–1995 peace agreement oversight.
